Accommodation

Guests will sleep inside the iconic Mbaru Niang, a traditional cone-shaped house of the village. We share a warm communal sleeping space together with other guests, just like how locals have lived for generations. Mattresses, pillows, and blankets are prepared on the wooden floor, creating a cozy and simple resting space after a full day of trekking and mountain air. No air conditioning, no private rooms, and only limited electricity — but what you gain is something much more special: the quiet sound of nature, the cool mountain breeze, and the rare chance to experience authentic village life inside one of Indonesia’s most unique traditional homes.
Sleeping in Mbaru Niang is not just accommodation — it is part of the cultural journey and memory of visiting Wae Rebo.
Trip Overview
Wae Rebo Village is a remote and culturally preserved traditional village located high in the mountains of Flores, known for its iconic cone-shaped Mbaru Niang houses and strong ancestral traditions. Surrounded by misty forests and untouched nature, the village offers a rare opportunity to experience authentic Manggarai culture, simple highland living, and a peaceful atmosphere far away from modern city life. A 2D1N trip allows guests to not only visit but also stay overnight in the village, experience traditional hospitality, local food, and the unique atmosphere of life in one of Indonesia’s most extraordinary heritage villages.

Upon arrival in Wae Rebo Village, guests will be welcomed through a traditional ceremony led by village elders as part of local cultural protocol, symbolizing respect to the ancestors and permission to stay in the village. The village is formed by several iconic Mbaru Niang houses standing in a circular formation, each built entirely from natural materials such as wood, bamboo, and palm fiber roofing. Inside the house, the atmosphere is warm, simple, and communal. Guests will sleep using traditional shared bedding arrangements on clean floor mattresses with blankets and pillows provided, offering a truly authentic highland living experience.
The journey starts with an early morning departure from Labuan Bajo, followed by an overland drive towards the highlands of Flores. Along the route, guests will pass coastal roads, local villages, rice fields, and small traditional markets, offering a glimpse into daily life on the island. As the drive continues inland, the landscape gradually changes into greener valleys and mountain terrain with cooler temperatures. The drive duration depends on road and weather conditions but is designed with rest stops to ensure a comfortable journey.

Upon reaching the final access point, the journey continues by riding local motorbikes to the trekking starting point, followed by a guided forest trek to Wae Rebo Village. The trek typically takes around 2–3 hours depending on walking pace and weather conditions. The trail passes through tropical forest, small streams, and gradual uphill terrain. This part of the journey requires moderate physical fitness and comfortable trekking footwear is strongly recommended.
Meals are prepared by the local community using fresh, locally sourced ingredients and cooked using traditional methods. Guests can expect warm rice, vegetables, simple protein dishes, local spices, and freshly brewed Flores coffee or tea, all served and enjoyed together in a communal setting. Due to the remote mountain location, facilities are simple — cold mountain water is used for washing and basic hygiene, adding to the authentic village lifestyle experience. At night, with almost zero light pollution, guests can often witness a clear sky filled with stars, and on clear nights, the Milky Way is visible above the valley, creating a peaceful and unforgettable mountain atmosphere. The experience in Wae Rebo is about cultural connection, simplicity, nature, and living fully present in one of Indonesia’s most unique traditional villages.
